Steady drip, still-green draped in liquid longing for a season already ending. Still damp with memory of a Spring barely gone. Wrap impermanence around us a woolen shawl of sheared promises. Somehow surprised, again, that Summer never lasts forever. And heights of bright days’ blossoming return, in time, both from and to depths of Autumn’s falling. We can never accomplish all that we hope in a season, a year, a lifetime. That is the nature of the nexus of cyclical universe and linear desire. Flow exists because of ebb. These ruderal flowerings, learning to live in the edges of a civilization collapsing. Air is thick with promises no industry could keep. But still, the renewing rains seep. But still, the leaves fall. I like to think there are more days ahead than behind; We cannot know what tomorrow holds. Most choices make no winners, just manage loss. This harvest smaller than hoped or planned. But still, I count the food in my hand. Each seed precious, a lesson in survival. Each seed precious that survived a harsh year. In blustery enchantment, loving wild wind and still-warm sun, we might be running out of chances, but we are not yet done. And still, the leaves fall. Perhaps goldening edges, tattered, majestic, can remind us to turn in. Stoke gentle fires. Learn how to store. Remember how to share, even, especially, if cupboards seem bare. Enjoy fruit when we can. Hold each other through the coming squalls. Watch the leaves that still fall.
